Burkina: the association of hairdressers presents a directory of 54 traditional hairstyles

The Association of Hairdressers and Beauticians of Burkina Faso (ACEBF) presented on Friday in Ouagadougou, a directory of 54 traditional hairstyles from different ethnic groups in Burkina, in order to contribute to the safeguarding and promoting aesthetic values.

"We had collected 54 traditional hairstyles from the different ethnic groups of Burkina that we want to work to enhance, to make artistic and traditional because our country is extremely rich", declared the president of the association of hairdressers beauticians of Burkina Youssouf Kaboré .

According to him, this project, financed to the tune of 29 million, including 25 million by the Cultural Development Fund and 4 million by the association, aims to enable all hairdressers who participate in international competitions to know the origin of authentic hairstyles, their meanings and the different creatures that accompany them.

Kaboré also informed that the hairstyle is used as a means of communication in certain communities. How many minors have been raped when it could be avoided by hairdressing?

“For example, among the dagara there are standard hairstyles for girls who have not reached puberty”.

Youssouf Kaboré spoke on Friday, September 1, 2023 in Ouagadougou, on the occasion of the official closing ceremony of the project to improve creations, followed by the promotion and enhancement of traditional hairstyles to present a directory of authentic hairstyles of the different ethnic groups which aim to promote the cultural riches of Burkina Faso.

Around the parade, the ACEBF presented the various female hairstyles of the Burkinabe region, in particular those of the Mossi, Gourounsi, Bissa, Bwaba and Tamacheque communities, among others.

"This directory that we have just put will not remain in drawers, we have crisscrossed regions in which we will present the results of the collection because this project is not that of the association of hairdressers but that of the whole Burkinabés, reassured President Kaboré.

He also noted that the difficulties encountered in the field were, among others, the accessibility of certain areas due to the security crisis and the approach of knowledge holders in certain communities who had difficulty revealing their treasures.
