"This offensive will focus on agro-pastoral and fishery products that will reduce our country's dependence on imports of consumer products, but also those that will enhance the potential of national production", underlined the Minister of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources, Commander Ismaël Sombié.
He specified that the cost of the agropastoral and fisheries offensive 2023-2025 is 592 billion FCFA.
"This amount will be financed up to 46% by public resources and the 54% of the remaining budget equivalent to 317 billion FCFA will be financed by private resources", he added.
Commander Ismaël Sombié spoke on Tuesday in Ouagadougou, during a press conference on the 2023-2025 agro-pastoral and fisheries offensive.
According to him, the success of the plan will strongly depend on the mobilization of private actors and the actions necessary for the involvement and commitment of the private sector will be undertaken immediately to maximize the chances of being able to start private investments in 2024.
"This is why we will work primarily on eight sectors with the imposition of high-yielding varieties for these products, which are rice, corn, potatoes, wheat, fish, livestock/meat, poultry and mango," the minister said.
In terms of objectives, he said, the implementation of the offensive should make it possible, among other things, to ensure, by 2025, the production of 1,000,000 tons of rice and 2,000,000 tons of maize to cover 100% of consumption needs, the production of 60,000 tons of potatoes for import needs and the production of 100,000 tons of fish for half of national consumption needs.
As major innovations, Minister Sombié cited the revitalization of the support network by bringing department managers closer to the major agro-pastoral production areas and the empowerment of regional structures for the implementation of activities formerly carried out by central structures.
"The increase in the budget allocated to the purchase of inputs by 4.2 billion through budget support from the MEFP and a reorganization of the MARAH budget and the contribution of more than 1,500 VDPs to ensure the production and security of large production sites", declared the Minister in charge of Agriculture.
The Government adopted during its weekly meeting of August 30, 2023, an Operational Plan for food sovereignty and the creation of decent jobs in the agro-pastoral sector.
Called “2023-2025 agro-pastoral offensive”, this plan concerns corn, rice, potatoes, wheat, fish, the livestock and meat and poultry sectors.
Its main objectives are to increase Burkina Faso's food sovereignty, create jobs and contribute to macroeconomic development.
