Pretoria: H.E. Amb. Selma Malika Haddadi, the Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has successfully concluded a working visit to Pretoria, South Africa. The visit was notable for its high-level political engagement and a reinforced commitment to Pan-African solidarity.
According to African Press Organization, the visit coincided with the Inaugural Diaspora Week, hosted from 8 to 10 October 2025 by the Government of South Africa. The theme of the event, "Promoting Socio-Economic and Cultural Rights as forms of Reparatory Justice," anchored the Deputy Chairperson's agenda in Pretoria. The activities during the week focused on reparatory justice, memorialization, spirituality, and healing, underscoring the African Union's dedication to strengthening its strategic partnership with South Africa and engaging with its diaspora community.
In a tribute to Africa's fallen freedom fighters, Amb. Haddadi visited the Freedom Park Heritage Site and Museum, where she laid a wreath at the Wall of Names. This gesture highlighted the AU's commitment to preserving the memory of those who fought for the continent's dignity and liberation.
Amb. Haddadi also delivered a keynote address on memorialization and healing, emphasizing the African Union Commission's leadership in continental remembrance initiatives. She highlighted projects such as the AU Human Rights Memorial and the Great Museum of Africa, calling for global and intergenerational collaboration to transform historical grief into unity and resilience for Africa's future.
During her visit, Amb. Haddadi held a meeting with His Excellency Mr. Alvin Botes, South Africa's Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation. Their discussions focused on South Africa's supportive role in the African Union, continental integration, and collaborative efforts within the frameworks of Agenda 2063 and the United Nations. Both parties expressed their shared commitment to advancing Africa's development and global positioning.
