Morocco Sees Russia as a Reliable and Constructive Partner, Says Foreign Minister

Moscow: Morocco, under the guidance of King Mohammed VI, regards Russia as a reliable and constructive partner, as expressed by Morocco's Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, Nasser Bourita. The minister made this statement during a press conference in Moscow following discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the dialogue between the two ministers was deep and fruitful, emphasizing the strong strategic partnership between Morocco and Russia. This partnership is characterized by mutual respect between King Mohammed VI and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Next year marks the 10th anniversary of the Deep Strategic Partnership between the two nations, a milestone that will be celebrated as an opportunity to review and celebrate various achievements since its inception.

On the economic front, Bourita highlighted significant growth, particularly in tourism, with an increase in Russian tourists expected. The reopening of the Casablanca-Moscow route by Royal Air Maroc, with seven weekly flights, and the upcoming launch of a direct route to Saint Petersburg, exemplify this growth. Politically, Bourita underscored the robust relations between Morocco and Russia, marked by coordinated efforts within regional and international forums.

A key development from the discussions was the signing of a memorandum of understanding to organize bilateral consultations between the foreign ministries of both countries. Furthermore, the 8th session of the Morocco-Russia Joint Commission is set to review and develop economic relations, with agreements covering several sectors such as agriculture, maritime fisheries, and academic cooperation.

Bourita noted the historical depth of Moroccan-Russian relations, which date back to the 18th century, supported by a legal framework of 188 bilateral agreements. He emphasized the need to engage new actors, particularly economic operators, to strengthen sectoral cooperation. The African continent also plays a pivotal role in the political dialogue, with both countries recognizing Russia's significance in Africa and Morocco's active role on the continental stage.

The discussions also addressed the situation in the Sahel, with an emphasis on respecting the sovereignty and political choices of the states in this region. Bourita reinforced Morocco's commitment to supporting stability and development in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, free from external influence.

Additionally, the minister highlighted the importance of the Russia-Africa Forum as a platform for development and security aspirations, and the role of multilateral bodies, advocating for a fair and effective multilateral system that addresses the rights and aspirations of developing countries, especially in Africa.

Bourita described his talks with Lavrov as positive and extended an invitation to the Russian Foreign Minister to visit Morocco in celebration of the 10th anniversary of their strategic partnership.
