Nando: The governor of the Nando region, Adama Jean Yves Bere, embarked on a monitoring visit of the 2025-2026 agricultural campaign, which is anticipated to be fruitful. The visit took place on Saturday, October 11, and included key agricultural sites in Poa, Sanguie, and Gouloure, Boulkiemde.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the governor was accompanied by the regional director of agriculture, Zorma Antoine. Antoine expressed optimism about the agricultural season, citing the region's significant agro-pastoral potential as crucial for achieving national food self-sufficiency. Production targets for the campaign include at least 1,143,000 tonnes of crops, with 736,000 tonnes dedicated to cereals. Antoine is confident that these targets will be surpassed.
The governor attributed the anticipated success to several factors, including the provision of resources by the State, efficient supervision by agricultural technicians, and the positive response from producers to training and advice. The State's support includes ploughing, fertilizers, and subsidized seeds through the agro-pastoral and fisheries offensive (OAPH) 2023-2025.
Community mobilization around food self-sufficiency initiatives is evident, with producers engaging in collective projects such as lowland development. For instance, the rice-growing lowland in Gouloure, initially developed by the PARIS project, expanded from 27 to 47 hectares this campaign, with plans for further extension. Programs like REGIDEP have also developed over 200 hectares, contributing to the region's agricultural dynamism.
In Poa, the governor visited fields of millet, sorghum, and corn made possible by CES/DRS developments under the RESI-2P program. Governor Bere highlighted the importance of self-sufficiency, urging farmers to invest in local projects and maintain their cohesion.
Despite the positive outlook, challenges persist. The producers' spokesperson thanked the authorities for their visit, which served as further motivation. However, they raised concerns about soil aridity and water scarcity, requesting support for access to drinking water and modern agricultural equipment.
The governor's visit, marked by the symbolic start of the rice harvest in Gouloure, underscores the positive trajectory of the 2025-2026 agricultural campaign and the Nando region's commitment to contributing to national food sovereignty.
