Allons à Bobo Music Festival: “After five days of festivities, we are very satisfied”, (Promoter)

After five days of festivities, the second edition of the Allons à Bobo Music Festival (FEMABO) has closed its doors. The promoter Siaka Coulibaly said Chako Lombardy takes stock of the event at the microphone of the AIB.

Burkina Information Agency (AIB): After five days of the festival, what is your assessment?

Siaka Coulibaly says Chako Lombardy:

After five days of festivities, we are very satisfied. We had a colorful ceremony, which highlighted the cultural diversity of our country and the joking relationship through the parade of the Peul, Bobo and Dioula ethnic groups. About twenty artists came to offer great performances at this festival.

AIB: What are the difficulties encountered?

Siaka Coulibaly says Chako Lombardy:

Difficulties abound. It is above all the mobilization side. It's true that the public responded favorably but we expected a lot more than that.

It turns out that there are many activities organized during the same period and this could be justified by the low mobilization.

The mobilization was a bit mixed, especially on the third day when the public did not respond as expected. Apart from that, the other days the public responded present.

AIB: How do you compare this edition with the first?

Siaka Coulibaly says Chako Lombardy:

It is a growing business. We will not say that it is maturity but in any case it has grown compared to last year. We tried to detect the faults of the first edition and to correct them.

AIB: What are the prospects for future editions?

Siaka Coulibaly says Chako Lombardy:

This year, we organized an evening dedicated to the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and two live nights during the event. Next year, we will do the live the last two days.

One of the perspectives, for the next editions, is to take our artists to perform in other countries such as Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, Ghana or in other regions of Burkina Faso.

AIB: What message do you have for sponsors, guests, artists and the public at the end of your activity?

Siaka Coulibaly says Chako Lombardy:

We only have one word, thank you. We had sponsors who were our shoulder, who supported us, who were our wing with certain partners, who did not hesitate for a moment to put their hand in their pocket to support us. We invite them to always have a look at our place for future editions.

We particularly thank Maître Yacouba Dembélé, Notary, who is a personal friend, a promoter, who, despite his social rank, remained by our side at the press conference and during the five days, every evening to follow the shows.

We thank him for his personal contribution to this festival. We can say that we are on the right track.

When we look at artists who are not known in Bobo-Dioulasso and who have left risky areas to come and bring color to this edition, we are very happy.

We do not forget our mothers, our sisters, our children, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who live in a difficult security situation because of terrorism. These people have left everything to save their lives. To support them, we brought them a donation of food before the opening of FEMABO.

World Tuna Day: Seychellois students take a peek at one of largest tuna canneries

Students from secondary and post-secondary schools in Seychelles were able to learn more about all the work done up until tuna cans are put on the market during visits to the Indian Ocean Tuna (IOT) factory on Tuesday.

The visits, which coincided with World Tuna Day, to one of the world"s largest tuna canneries, which is managed by Thai Union, gave students the chance to know what job opportunities are on offer at the company.

The activity was organised in collaboration with the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA). The authority told reporters that the visit will help students to know what goes on at the factory, in case they wish to look for a career at IOT in the future.

"We wanted the students to have the opportunity to know what goes on at every stage of the factory and to also show them the importance of the factory here in Seychelles," said Darrel Antat, the assistant manager for public relations at SFA.

Antat explained that while this activity was done on World Tuna Day, he hopes that IOT will be open to more visits in the future from students.

IOT is located in New Port in Seychelles' capital, Victoria, and has over 2,000 workers producing 300 tonnes of the company's famous canned tuna per day. This kind of visit requires careful planning and it was done in small groups, to ensure the students' safety as well as ensuring limited disruption of the company's work.

The company processes tuna caught in the Indian Ocean that is used by some of the most famous seafood brands including John West, Petit Navire and Mareblu.

Thai Union owns 60 percent of IOT and the remaining 40 percent belongs to the government of Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean.

Two of the students who took part in the visit said that they were very pleased to have been given the opportunity to visit IOT and learned a lot.

"I enjoy everything about the ocean, including fish, so it was great to have seen how the whole process from cleaning the fish to putting them in cans goes," said Anushka Payet, one of the students.

Gibson Rosine said he was impressed with the level of importance that is put towards hygiene for the staff and also for the fish that is being processed.

"I got the chance to see the work done in the labs here and that was very interesting for me as I want to work in a lab one day," he said.

World Tuna Day is observed on May 2 every year to raise awareness about the importance of tuna fish and promote sustainable fishing practices.

This date represents the accomplishment of fishing communities, scientists, and environmentalists who collaborated to safeguard tuna schools around the globe and develop a model for sustainable fishing.

UNEP-GEF offer Seychelles technical expertise for introducing electric mobility

Four international experts are evaluating and will advise the transport ministry on the best ways to implement electric mobility in Seychelles, the ministry said on Sunday.

The implementation of a two-year electric mobility project in Seychelles was launched in November 2022 and is expected to take four years to complete. It is being implemented with the help of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

UNEP-GEF are key partners in the project, offering technical expertise and a grant of $400,000.

In the first part of the project, the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) will introduce full electric buses to their fleet. Currently, SPTC has 200 buses which complete over 1,400 journey per day and use approximately 220,000 litres of fuel per month

The role of the experts is to provide the best way forward to implement a sustainable electric transport system in the Seychelles during a two-year period.

The experts have knowledge in international policy, business and strategy, international e-mobility technology, international battery technology and charging and renewable energy integration.

In a meeting with the Minister for Transport, Antony Derjacques, the UNEP delegation expressed their satisfaction for the progress that Seychelles has made despite the delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The head of the UNEP delegation, Annika Berlin, said that "strategy and capacity building is the core of the project. We hope to see 50 percent of buses and cars electrified by 2030 and for that we welcome other partners."

The experts met with key ministries and stakeholders to understand better the procurement of buses and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme, and environmental policies such as the disposal of batteries.

The project is also receiving the support of other partners such as IRENA (International Renewable Energy Agency) and the Public Utilities Corporation (PUC) for its transport plan. A potential partner is Calstart, a clean transport expert based in America, which intends to help with the transition to electric mobility and its education.

UNEP-GEF have vast experience working with Small Island Developing States such as Mauritius, Madagascar, the Caribbean, Fiji and the Solomon Islands.

Twenty six turtles of Emyde leprosa species in distress, rescued from “Oued Chiba” dam

Twenty-six freshwater turtles from the "Oued Chiba" dam in Nabeul (North-East of Tunisia), reported to be in distress due to the drought, have just been rescued and taken to a natural water source close to the dam.

The rescue operation was carried out on Saturday by a team of researchers from the National Institute of Marine Sciences and Technologies (INSTM), officials from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries and members of the Maamoura Coast Protection Association (APLM).

"These turtles belong to the Emyde leprosa species found in the Mediterranean basin countries. This species has been classified by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature as vulnerable at the European level, insofar as it has almost disappeared in this region of the world," APLM member Mohamed El Benney explained in a statement to TAP.

"Most of the turtles of this species are now found in Tunisia. However, they are still threatened with endangerment due to climate change, which has led to the drying up of dams in the country. In fact, ten turtles have perished and could not be saved," he regretted.

A species vital to the balance of ecosystems

Mohamed El Benney added that the authorities as well as the INSTM experts and the members of his association will continue to ensure a scientific and technical follow-up in order to preserve this species which is "vital to the balance of nature," as it holds a predominant place in the food chain.

Tunisia is going through its 4th year of drought. The national dam filling rate did not exceed 30% from September 1, 2022 to April 28, 2023, according to the National Observatory of Agriculture (ONAGRI).

- Mehrez Manai

- Aymen Aloui

- Zied Lakhdhar

It should be noted that the PPDU leadership (the Mongi Rahoui camp) decided to hold the party's second congress on April 30 and May 1.

The PPDU last June decided to dismiss Mongi Rahoui, the leader of the party, "in application of the provisions of the party's internal regulations and in order to preserve its unity and guarantee the independence of its political positions".

The PPDU attributed the decision to "Mongi Rahoui's insistence on going against the party's position".

In a statement signed by Zied Lakhdhar, the party's secretary-general, the political bureau said that "any summons to the PPDU congress from another party lacks any political or legal legitimacy".
