Ouagadougou: 20 promoters of climate change adaptation projects received, Thursday, at the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, checks with a total value of 1 billion 18 million FCFA for the implementation of their respective projects.
As part of the integrated water resources project (GIRE) 2021-2025, a project launch in 2023 made it possible to select projects that respond to the challenges of climate change.
For the Minister in charge of Water and Sanitation, Roger Baro, these projects aim to significantly improve the resilience of rural populations to climate change and security challenges in accordance with the government’s strategic vision.
‘Out of 113 projects received, 20 were selected at the end of the work, to impact and significantly contribute to improving the climate resilience of 66,135 direct beneficiaries including internally displaced people,’ said Mr. Baro.
The Minister in charge of Water and Sanitation also invited the selected project leaders to their obligations of results and healthy an
d transparent management of the financial resources made available to them.
‘I will personally carry out field visits to assess the implementation of these projects,’ he indicated.
He thanked the Danish Embassy which financed these projects to the tune of more than one billion FCFA.
The Ambassador of Denmark, Kristian Kirkegaard Edinger, for his part, recalled that one of the objectives of the Burkina Faso-Denmark bilateral development program (2021-2025) is to help the country better cope with climate change. benefit of the Burkinabe population.
‘For a total envelope estimated at 93 billion FCFA for the period 2021-2025, 39 billion CFA Francs are allocated to Water and Sanitation, including 8.8 billion for IWRM. The water sector then represents 42% of our commitment in Burkina Faso,’ he underlined.
The Danish ambassador then invited the promoters to work with conviction and accountability in order to prove their ability to implement such projects for the benefit of their respective communities.
‘To the
general management of water agencies, I invite you to fully play your role of monitoring, learning and capitalization throughout this process. The lessons that will be learned will allow you to improve your procedures for your future calls for proposals,’ he added.
The representative of the basin committees of water agencies, Léonie Ilboudo/Hien, highlighted the importance of IWRM to strengthen the resilience of ecosystems and populations, facing the devastating effects of climate change.
Ms. Ilboudo/Hien adds that these projects will make a strong contribution to adaptation to climate change and generate a certain benefit for users and ecosystems.
‘We will ensure efficient implementation of these projects so that each result is achieved and produces the expected effect,’ she reassured.
For the representative of the check beneficiaries, Gaston Sanou, thanks to this support, they will be able to implement innovations adapted to climate change to face the environmental challenges encountered in our basins.

In the current economic context, we fully appreciate the extent of this financial effort which particularly highlights the importance you attach to adaptation to climate change in the water use sector,’ reassured Mr. Sanou.
‘We therefore reassure you of our commitment to make the appropriate efforts to achieve results,’ he continued.
Mr. Sanou received a check for 34 million 979 million FCFA for his project which concerns the protection of the Houet marsh, the environment of which is entirely polluted through the construction of filter dikes.
Like Mr. Sanou, the country representative of the NGO Humundi Alimata Sawadogo, received a check for 213 million 790 thousand FCFA.
‘This will make it possible to carry out actions at the levels of Ziga-Est and Ziga-Ouest to support market gardeners who actually need to promote agro-ecological practices to boost the dynamic of food security in the region,’ she said. underlines
