Ouagadougou: Despite ongoing security challenges, Burkina Faso has made significant progress in the modernization of its civil status system, achieving a physical execution rate of 64.11% and a financial execution rate of 74.33% for the activities planned for 2024, as reported by AIB on Friday.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the president of the Steering Committee of the National Civil Status Strategy, Sadou Sankara, announced that in 2024, 22 main civil status centers were successfully networked. Additionally, 3,391,907 civil status documents from 54 municipalities were digitized and secured, and 145,655 birth certificates were issued to non-holders and vulnerable individuals. Sankara shared these updates during the first ordinary session of 2025 held in Ouagadougou, focusing on reviewing and validating the 2024 annual report and revising the 2025 work plan.
Justin Omer Balima, the Director General of Civil Status Modernization, highlighted that despite the achievements, substantial challenges remain. He emphasized the need for discussions on deploying a civil status registration system through an application developed by local engineers, to further enhance the efficiency and reach of civil status services.
The ongoing National Civil Status Strategy for 2023-2025 aims to establish a modern and secure civil status system in Burkina Faso by 2027. This system is intended to ensure the systematic registration of civil status events, uphold equity and human rights, and produce vital civil status statistics to aid in development planning.
