Burkina Faso Celebrates T´ with Community Days to Highlight Cultural Heritage

Ouagadougou: The Institute of Social Sciences (INSS) of the National Center for Scientific and Technological Research (CNRST) has initiated Community Days to celebrate and promote t´, a staple local dish cherished across Burkina Faso. The event, themed "Knowledge and know-how around t´," is scheduled to take place from April 29 to 30, 2025, in Ouagadougou, featuring a series of scientific and social activities aimed at showcasing local culinary traditions, particularly those involving t´.

According to Burkina Information Agency, INSS Director Dr. Aoua Carole Bambara/Congo emphasized the importance of highlighting local produce such as t´, as well as demonstrating the potential of improved corn varieties developed by the Institute of the Environment and Agricultural Research (INERA). These corn varieties, known for their resistance to insects and drought, are central to the event, which aims to promote their usage in local dishes.

The Community Days will feature approximately twenty representatives from various communities, each showcasing their unique methods of preparing t´. Dr. Bambara/Congo noted that there is a rich cultural tradition associated with t´, particularly among the Moss© family, where the dish is shared as a family and certain rituals are observed during its preparation and consumption. The event will also engage schools to help students appreciate these culinary traditions.

Naaba Baongo de Gourcy, the event's sponsor, highlighted the significance of t´ as a unifying cultural element amidst Burkina Faso's community diversity. He stressed that the preparation of t´ varies across communities, serving as a cultural symbol and common denominator that can foster social cohesion.

The sponsor further elaborated on the cultural identity conveyed through t´, noting that variations in its preparation can signify different ethnic backgrounds. Ms. Lamien Ouando Adiza, representing the Lyolo community, shared insights into the ceremonial importance of t´ among the Ly©la, where it is traditionally prepared with shea butter to extend its shelf life and is served during significant life events.
