Ouagadougou: The Burkinabe authorities have introduced a mandatory patriotic immersion program aimed at instilling patriotism, civic-mindedness, and other indigenous values in young people. Established by a presidential decree on June 24, 2025, the program involves a supervised 30-day stay where participants receive training in civic responsibility, discipline, and patriotism.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Minister of Secondary Education and Vocational Training, Dr. Boubacar Savadogo, emphasized that the immersion is not a form of punishment nor a deployment of young people to the front lines, but rather a school for discipline and civics. The government clarified that this initiative does not replace the National Patriotic Service (SNP), which is longer and more demanding.
This year, nearly 62,500 new high school graduates across Burkina Faso are participating in the patriotic immersion program. The measure is expected to expand progressively to include students who pass the BEPC, CAP, and BEP exams. Enrollment in the next grade is contingent upon receiving a certificate from the program. Exceptions are made for pregnant women and those with children under two years old, while workers are not included in the program.
As per Article 8 of the decree, individuals who fail to attend the patriotic immersion program may face community service as outlined by the penal code, in addition to completing the immersion in a subsequent session.
President Ibrahim Traor© officially launched the program on August 13, 2025, urging young people to embody patriotism, honesty, and solidarity. He encouraged them to learn about Burkina Faso's history and sacrifices and to prepare for current challenges, particularly security issues. The program aims to cultivate patriotism and loyalty to the nation.
The initiative offers new high school graduates training in civics, national history, and collective discipline, integrating practical activities such as sanitation, reforestation, agriculture, and patriotic songs. It also incorporates security and resilience concepts, alongside promoting national languages and solidarity, ultimately aiming to develop responsible and committed citizens.
