The United Nations supported more than a million people in the first half of 2024, ResponsibleOuagadougou, October 24, 2024 (AIB)- The Resident Coordinator of the United Nations system in Burkina Faso, Carol Flore-Smereczniak, announced Thursday that her organization has provided food assistance to more than one million Burkinabè in 10 regions of the country, from January to June 2024.According to Ms. Flore-Smereczniak, in the first half of 2024, the United Nations system provided food, shelter, medicine, drinking water, etc., to more than a million people in 106 municipalities in 10 regions of the country, out of a target of 3.8 million.Ms. Flore-Smereczniak spoke on Thursday, October 24, 2024, during a press conference marking the commemoration of the 79th United Nations Day.The coordinator indicated that these humanitarian assistance actions are implemented in accordance with a humanitarian response plan, itself linked to the government's national humanitarian response plan.According to the Unit ed Nations representative, the major challenge, four months before the end of the year, remains the mobilization of resources for the implementation of solidarity actions."Out of a forecast of 935 million US dollars, only about 39% of this amount has been mobilized to date," she said.This day was also used by the United Nations system to take stock of the actions carried out in 2023 in its four pillars, namely: the peace pillar, the people pillar, the planet pillar and the prosperity pillar.The United Nations has been present in Burkina Faso since 1966, with a country team of 33 entities, 25 of which are resident agencies.They contribute, alongside the Burkinabe government, to improving the well-being of the population.The system employs approximately 1,400 people, 80% of whom are Burkinabe.
