Tannounyan: The campaign for the free distribution of long-lasting impregnated mosquito nets (LLINs) was officially launched in Niangoloko by the Minister of Health. This pivotal event took place in the commune of Niangoloko, attended by administrative, customary, and religious authorities, technical and financial partners, as well as health authorities from the Tannounyan region.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the campaign is a significant step in the ongoing fight against malaria, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Burkina Faso. The Minister of Health, Dr. Robert Kargougou, emphasized that the campaign had initially been launched by Prime Minister Rimtalba Jean Emmanuel Ou©draogo on June 19 in Komsilga, covering the Hauts Bassins and Centre regions. Distribution in these areas occurred from that date until July 3.
The current phase involves distribution across additional regions, with activities commencing from July 12 to 17, 2025, and other regions starting from July 18. Dr. Kargougou encouraged the population to collect and use the mosquito nets effectively, stressing the importance of sleeping under them every night.
He also highlighted the need for environmental cleanliness to reduce malaria breeding grounds and urged parents to ensure that children aged 3 to 59 months receive free malaria-prevention medication. Additionally, he pointed out the introduction of malaria vaccination and the critical role of parents in ensuring their children are vaccinated and sleep under treated nets.
The choice of the Tannounyan region for the campaign launch was due to its border location and high vector prevalence and rainfall. Dr. Kargougou recognized the efforts of the Government and partners in advancing the fight against malaria.
To conclude the launch event, the Minister of Health participated in a tree-planting activity at the Niangoloko Medical Center with Surgical Unit, underscoring the campaign's broader health and environmental goals.
