Burkina: AJSB designates Abdoulaye Zongo (EFO) player of the month for March

The captain of the Etoile filante de Ouagadougou (EFO) football team Abdoulaye Zongo has been named best player of the month for March by the Association of Sports Journalists of Burkina (AJSB ) through a press release of which the AIB had a copy.

EFO central defender Abdoulaye Zongo alias Kouri was appointed because of his “leadership and experience”. “He guided his EFO partners to the best harvest of the month in the league,” explained the members of the AJSB nomination committee.

They inform that “4 points taken in 2 games, the EFO was able to limit the damage in its fight to maintain. In addition to the championship, the queen of the stadiums won her FA Cup matches, often thanks to her defensive solidity around her captain.

According to the press release, “Salif Bagaté (2 nd behind Kouri) of Salitas FC also stood out in March thanks mainly to his performance in the Coupe du Faso. His club took only 1 point in league 1, but went through in the cup with 2 goals for the bib 29 of the Doves”.

Dieudonné Sié Noufé of ASFA-Y was invited to the trio of the AJSB ranking. He has 1 goal and 2 assists to his credit last month.

Abdoulaye Zongo's club, EFO qualified last Sunday for the final of the Coupe du Faso. But in Ligue 1, the Queen of the stadiums is the first non-relegation player in the standings, so she is fighting to stay in the Burkinabè football elite.

It was ASFB striker Mody Cissé who won the AJSB player of the month award last February.

Games of La Francophonie: Kinshasa to host 9th edition in July-August 2023

For 10 days, from 28 July to 6 August 2023, Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC, will host the 9th Games of La Francophonie, “a crossroads for exchanges between French-speaking countries”, according to the organizers. During this sporting and cultural event, which takes place every four years, more than 40 delegations are expected.

In total, more than 1,500 young people, aged 18 to 35, from the 88-member states and governments of the International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF), including more than a third of the member states of the United Nations, will compete in sport and culture. Nine sports competitions are on the program, as well as 11 cultural competitions.

“Nzango, “footwork” in Lingala, is a discipline that will be introduced at the 9th Games of La Francophonie in Kinshasa”

In the DRC, the organizers plan to introduce a new discipline as a demonstration. This is Nzango, “footwork” in Lingala, a simple traditional game for young girls in schoolyards or on the street. Little by little, it is gaining momentum and wants to establish itself as a competitive discipline. To the point where it interests mothers and adult women. It is this growing notoriety, characteristic of “Kin la Belle”, which today opens the doors to the Games of La Francophonie.

“The OIF is taking up the challenge of organising the Games in Kinshasa after a three-year hibernation due to the Covid-19 pandemic”

The 9th Games of La Francophonie, which will take place in Kinshasa from 28 July to 6 August 2023, will be held three years later. Indeed, it is in 2020 that they should have been organised, still in the DRC. On the sidelines of the 34th summit of heads of state of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, an OIF delegation, led by Secretary General Louise Mushikiwabo, had organised a campaign to promote the event, with a concert by the Congolese artist Fally Ipupa. While everyone had planned to meet in the DRC capital a few months later, the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic compromised everything.

“The IOF considers sport and culture as powerful levers in the face of the challenges of insertion, equalitý of opportunity, inclusion and parity”

Created on 20 March 1970 in Niamey, Niger, the OIF is an international community that includes 300 million citizens of French-speaking countries around the world. This unique grouping, rich in diversity, implements political, educational, economic and cultural cooperation between its member countries, in the service of the populations.

Within this organization, it is considered that “sport and culture are powerful levers for responding to the challenges of integration, equal opportunities, inclusion and paritý. And for good reason, the IOF maintains, “they convey universal messages of tolerance, respect for diversity and equity. This logic pushes the cities hosting these Games to associate themselves with these values through their social and societal commitments.”

An event dedicated to youth, the 9th Games of La Francophonie are placed under the signs of Equity, Solidarity, Excellence and Responsibility.

Seychelles to host 7 more sports fishing tournaments in 2023, next up is Marlin Slam

Nine sports fishing tournaments have been scheduled this year with the Marlin Slam coming up on April 15, while two have already taken place.

The Marlin Slam will be a release tournament in which the crew will have to film and measure their catch, before releasing them to sea. The team with the biggest marlin caught and released will be declared the winner.

After the Marlin Slam, the Trevally Slam will take place in May, followed by the South East Monsoon Sailfish Tournament, the Yellowfin Tuna Cup, the La Digue Tournament, the Junior Tournament and finally, the Big Game Classic to end the year.

The first tournament for the year was the Heineken Fun Fish Slam won by Team Tsunami on January 28.

In March, the National Championship took place, where Team Paola was the grand winner, claiming a slew of individual titles as well, after fishing for over 30 hours.

"It was tough and we did not expect to win first place, but we did our best and we are very happy with that," said Team Paola captain, Charles Marzzochi.

They were followed by Team Rasta Shark, the smallest boat in the tournament, with just four crew members, with Rig Runners in third.

The National Championships featured seven boats, but only five managed to complete the tournament.

A member of the Seychelles Sports Fishing Club (SSFC), Farouk Baptiste, explained that the low turnout could have been due to the length of time the boats had to stay at sea.

"This year, the competing boats were smaller than usual and so it was quite difficult for them to stay overnight, while other boats encountered mechanical issues that caused them to abandon their outing," added Baptiste.

Meanwhile, the team and skippers' leagues are also on this year, with teams looking to dethrone last year's winners, Team Soolyman and Francis Marie, respectively.

The Seychelles Sports Fishing Club is a relatively young club, founded in April of 2009. It is a non-profit association committed to promoting sport fishing in Seychelles, aiming to balance conservation and education with traditional angling practices.
