CEA-CFOREM: The reference center for drug science in Burkina

The Center for Training, Research and Expertise in Drug Sciences (CEA-CFOREM) at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University uses many innovative techniques to adapt drugs to certain patient needs, ranging from reducing the number of times medication is taken per day to reducing the length of hospitalization.'In this center, we work on various themes, including research and development of biomedicines, nanomedicines, pharmaceutical practice, drug synthesis, as well as geotechnology and biotechnology,' said Dr. Charles Sombié.Mr. Sombié spoke on Monday, September 2, 2024 at Joseph Ki-Zerbo University during a press caravan. According to him, CEA-CFOREM conducts research on everything that goes into the manufacture of medicines in order to evaluate the activity of each element. In the field of nanomedicines, it is about bringing innovations to adapt the medicine to certain needs of the patient, he maintained."For example, instead of taking a medication morning, noon and night, with these innovations, we can reduce the n umber of doses while obtaining the same result in the patient," said Dr. Sombié.According to him, through pharmaceutical practices and experiments, it is also possible to reduce the length of hospital stays and the costs of patient care.CEA-CFOREM also works closely with chemists to synthesize new products from chemical substances. "If we have a product from nature, we can work to modify it to make it more effective," said the teacher-researcher.According to Dr. Charles Sombié, his organization is also working, through biotechnology, to develop new tests to quickly diagnose diseases. He also stressed that the center is conducting programs on cell cultures as part of cancer treatment. "We will take some recipes and test them in the laboratory on cells that are likely to cause cancer in order to observe their activity," he concluded. The CEA-CFOREM aims to provide Burkina Faso and other countries in the West African sub-region with a critical mass of qualified human resources in the various fields of ph armaceutical sciences. It also aims to improve professional practice through continuing education, as well as the quality and performance of local production of medicines and pharmaceutical raw materials.Source: Burkina Information Agency
