Dori: The Sahel Regional Epidemic Management Committee (CRGE) held its first session of 2025 in Dori, marking a pivotal moment to evaluate the regional epidemiological situation. The meeting, chaired by the region's Secretary General, Mr. Auguste Kinda, focused on the developments of major pathologies as of the 26th week of the year and aimed to enhance coordinated efforts against diseases with epidemic potential.
According to Burkina Information Agency, malaria continues to be the most lethal disease in the region, with 7,257 serious cases and 75 fatalities. Dengue fever follows closely, with 1,323 suspected cases and two deaths reported. Other recorded ailments include influenza-like illness (544 cases), measles (66 cases), meningitis (49 cases with 5 deaths), and febrile jaundice (54 cases with 12 deaths). Maternal health remains a concern with 81 deaths, predominantly in the Dori health district.
The session led to several recommended measures, including enhanced epidemiological surveillance, systematic disease outbreak investigations, private sector training, and improved case management capacities. Key proposals also advocated for free rapid diagnostic tests for dengue fever. A call was made for partners and donors to mobilize the necessary resources for effective epidemic response.
Mr. Auguste Kinda highlighted the link between precarious sanitation conditions and the resurgence of certain pathologies, exacerbated by mass population displacements due to insecurity. He emphasized the need for collective mobilization involving technical services, CSOs, NGOs, and technical and financial partners. Mr. Kinda also acknowledged UNICEF's support in making the session possible.
Regional Director of Health, Mr. Djibrilla Alou Maiga, urged communities to improve sanitation by eliminating mosquito breeding grounds and using treated mosquito nets. The session coincided with the launch of the seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) campaign, urging community participation during the malaria and dengue-conducive winter period.
The CRGE session served as a crucial platform to address the health challenges in the Sahel region and to reinforce the commitment of authorities and partners in safeguarding public health.
