E-Cargo Bikes Boost Health and Sustainability in Eastern Uganda

Kampala: E-bikes are making a significant impact in eastern Uganda by enhancing rural health care, supporting businesses, and reducing CO2 emissions. E-mobility programs supported by the government are enabling nurses to cover long distances and efficiently implement vaccination programs.According to Deutsche Welle, the initiative utilizes robust, solar-charged cargo bikes to improve immunization rates. The sustainability project is backed by an NGO named Fabio and the German-based company Africrooze. This initiative is also providing opportunities for entrepreneurs to lease, rent, or purchase the bikes, promoting economic growth.Despite these advancements, challenges such as accessing affordable spare parts and repairs persist. Currently, only about a third of the bikes are manufactured locally. However, Uganda is aiming to double local production in the future.
