Economic recovery and the lay down of the foundations for sustainable development in Tunisia is the best way of combating irregular migration, Foreign Minister Nabil Ammar said on Monday at a meeting with International Organisation for Migration Director General Amy Pope, on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The challenges arising from the increase in migratory flows in the Mediterranean were reviewed during the meeting. Ammar underscored the need for a global approach to deal with the root causes of this phenomenon, pointing out the efforts exerted by Tunisia to combat irregular migration in strict compliance with Tunisian law and the relevant international conventions. Pope congratulated Tunisia on its efforts to combat irregular migration, underlining the need to create "regular migration corridors," while considering the needs of both countries of origin and destination. The UN official pointed out that this is a practical, albeit partial, solution to this phenomenon, which is on the upsurge in the Mediterranean.
