Hauts-Bassins: Reduction in the Price of Essential Generic Medicines Eases Burden on Population

Ouagadougou: The people of Bobo-Dioulasso welcomed with satisfaction, on Monday, May 26, 2025, the government's decision to reduce the prices of essential generic medicines (EGMs) and medical consumables throughout the national territory. This measure, aimed at improving access to healthcare, provides for reductions of up to 55% for injectable forms and 46% for tablets.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the head nurse of the Kiri CSPS, Adama Kon©, welcomed this initiative, stressing that it will allow patients to have greater access to health facilities. "This drop will encourage people to seek treatment, because many were not filling their prescriptions due to lack of funds," he said. Health facilities, which rely primarily on EGMs to treat common illnesses such as malaria and diarrheal diseases, will thus be able to better obtain supplies and avoid stockouts.

Managers of pharmaceutical depots, such as Seydou Sanou of the Sakabi Urban Medical Center, confirm the positive impact of this measure. "Even with 500 CFA francs, a patient can now receive treatment for malaria. It's a relief for families," he said. Direct beneficiaries, such as Salimata Nana and Nathalie Tapsoba, also express their gratitude to the government. "Thanks to this measure, prices are really affordable. I got more change than before," Nathalie Tapsoba said during her visit to the pharmacy.

This decision comes at a crucial time, particularly during the season of high malaria prevalence, and is seen as a significant step forward in improving the health conditions of the population.
