UN, September 11. /TASS/. The 79th session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York on Tuesday, a TASS correspondent on the ground reported. It will conclude with a high-level week from September 24 to 30, which will bring together world leaders and foreign ministers to present their vision of the international situation and define ways to address global challenges. The Russian delegation will be led by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. The presence of the representatives of Palestine, who have been granted a seat in the General Assembly Hall alongside the UN Member States, can be considered a historic moment. This was made possible by a General Assembly resolution adopted on 10 May 2024. Palestine will be able to include its representatives in the list of speakers at meetings on Middle East issues, propose amendments and make procedural proposals on behalf of a group of countries. However, Palestine remains an observer State and therefore does not have the right to vote in the General Assembly, and its representatives cannot stand for election to UN bodies. At the opening of the session, the representative of Trinidad and Tobago, Dennis Francis, officially handed over the presidency of the session to his successor, Philémon Yang, who served as Prime Minister of Cameroon from 2009 to 2019.General Assembly meetings on technical issues such as the adoption of the agenda and the formation of committees will continue until the high-level week. In addition, the Future Summit will be held on 22 and 23 September. It aims to forge a new international consensus on how to improve the present and save the future. Its main themes will be sustainable development and financing, peace and security, a digital future for all, youth and future generations, and global governance. The high-level week will open with a speech by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. According to preliminary lists, Western leaders are also scheduled to speak, including U.S. President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, who is scheduled to address the U.N. on Sept. 25, is also expected to arrive in New York.Source: Burkina Information Agency
