Loroum/Communal budget: Associations plead for the consideration of nutrition

The Right to grow advocacy group of Titao (R2G) organized, on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, an advocacy workshop with municipal authorities, with a view to increasing the community's own funds allocated to nutrition by the end of 2023.

The share of budgetary revenue allocated to nutrition remains very low in communities, even if it is not absent.

This is an observation by the associative actors of the commune of Titao, in the Northern region on September 19, 2023, in the face of the municipal authorities.

However, nutrition has become a public health issue in Burkina Faso. The province of Loroum (North) is part of areas with a high potential for malnutrition, which contributes to degrading local development indicators.

It is to draw the attention of decision-makers to this essential aspect of municipal life that the advocacy group Right to Grow (R2G) organized an advocacy workshop for municipal authorities.

The opportunity was taken by representatives of the seven member associations to present the food situation in the locality, particularly in this context of difficult security and humanitarian crisis.

Faced with local decision-makers, they wanted the municipalities to play their part in the fight against this scourge, through the allocation of at least 2% of the municipal budget's own funds to nutrition.

“The presence of all decision-makers from the province is already a satisfaction for us because we believe that each delegation president will now take it into account in their planning,” rejoiced Amsétou Nacanabo, president of the Titao advocacy group.

“After this advocacy activity we will put in place a monitoring mechanism in order to see the outcome of the commitments made,” she added.

The president of the special delegation of the commune of Titao, Sidiki Ganamé reaffirmed his desire to make nutrition one of the priorities of municipal action.

Chairing the session, the high commissioner of the Loroum province, Djibril Bassolé, welcomed this initiative which made it possible to discuss the issue of nutrition.

He decided to monitor the implementation of the commitments resulting from the workshop.

“I congratulate the initiators of this activity which saw active participation. This is a question that the municipalities can work to take into account,” said Mr. Bassolé.

The R2G advocacy group is an initiative of a consortium of associations and NGOs, in partnership with The Hunger Project to mobilize stakeholders around nutrition in Burkina Faso.

In June 2023, a plea, the implementation of which is ongoing, was made by the group on the increase and operationalization of the demonstration stores of the National Food Stock Management Company (SONAGESS) in the commune of Titao.
