Marrakech: Launch of the seventeenth congress of the Association of African Prosecutors

Ouagadougou: The work of the seventeenth congress of the Association of African Attorneys General began in Marrakech. This congress is hosted by the Kingdom of Morocco, represented by the 'Presidency of the Public Ministry', and takes place from July 10 to 12, 2024.The congress began with the discussion and adoption of decisions resulting from the meeting of the executive committee of the Association of African Prosecutors (APA), aimed at developing the work of the organs of the Public Prosecutor's Office and judicial prosecution on the African continent and to strengthen areas of cooperation between them, and these decisions were approved by the General Assembly of the Association.The general assembly elected Kenya president of the association, and the Kingdom of Morocco secretary general for a renewable period of two years. In addition, a proposal from the Presidency of the Public Prosecutor's Office was approved, making Morocco the permanent headquarters of the Association of African Prosecutors (APA).In a speech delivered on this occasion, Mr. El Hassan Daki, King's Attorney General at the Court of Cassation and President of the Public Prosecutor's Office of the Kingdom of Morocco, declared that the meeting addresses "many issues related to the development of the institutional structure of the association and the broadening of its field of action, thus consolidating the role of the association as an African space for dialogue, exchange of experiences, good practices and common work to improve the level of public ministries and legal proceedings, and develop the capacities of their members to best accomplish their missions. »He underlined that the international symposium, which is being held on the occasion of this meeting under the theme "The role of justice in the fight against environmental crime", addresses subjects aimed at highlighting the efforts of the Public Ministries of African countries in the field of combating environmental crime, to raise the challenges and constraints faced by law enforce ment agencies, as well as to highlight the role of justice in our countries to guarantee the protection of the environment and provide the necessary deterrence for those who break the rules governing respect for the environment.The congress and symposium brings together 88 participants, including attorneys general, judges from the Public Prosecutor's Office from 34 African countries, as well as representatives and experts from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the European Network of Prosecutors for Environment, the Council of Europe, the International Association of Prosecutors, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and the Administrative Court of the African Union.Also participating in this two-day symposium: the King's Attorneys General, the General Directorate of National Security, the Royal Gendarmerie, as well as representatives of certain Moroccan government sectors: the Ministry of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, the National Agency for Water and Forests, a nd the Moroccan Bar Association. The symposium sessions will discuss the national and international legal framework for environmental protection, best practices in combating environmental crime, the role of justice in environmental protection, and the right to a healthy environment as a human right.
