Dori: The Minister of State, Minister of Agriculture, Animal Resources and Fisheries, Commander Ismael Sombie, initiated the symbolic launch of the harvest on an 83-hectare rice field in Dori. This field is cultivated by over a thousand producers, primarily consisting of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
According to Burkina Information Agency, the technical details reveal that 1,302 producers, including 1,200 IDPs, are involved in this endeavor, which is expected to yield 332 tonnes of paddy rice and 664 tonnes of livestock fodder. These achievements, amid climatic and security challenges, highlight the determination of local populations to harness their potential.
Minister Sombie acknowledged and commended the producers for their accomplishments. He conveyed congratulations on behalf of Comrade Captain Ibrahim Traore, President of Burkina Faso, emphasizing the resilience of the Burkinabe people under challenging circumstances. The minister expressed his surprise at the success of the rice growing season, particularly given the difficulties anticipated around the Dori pond.
He urged producers to continue their efforts in preparation for the dry season, which will focus on cultivating wheat, potatoes, and other legumes. This next phase is set to commence once the current harvest concludes. Minister Sombie also announced plans for the government to introduce fish farming by installing floating cages in the Dori pond and at the Yacouta dam to boost tilapia production.
The dual production of rice and fodder has inspired further efforts for the Sahel region. Producers expressed gratitude for governmental support through agricultural equipment, seeds, and inputs, while also noting challenges like the early drying of the pond and insufficient land for rice cultivation.
Minister Sombie reassured continued government support and commended the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) for securing the area, which is crucial for agricultural activities. The ministerial delegation also visited other production sites, observing the community dynamics in agricultural projects.
The harvest launch at the Dori site underscores the resilience of the Sahel populations and the government's commitment to food security through practical measures. By promoting crop diversification, enhancing the Dori pond, and intensifying fish farming, the Ministry of Agriculture is advancing towards sustainable food self-sufficiency in this vital region of Burkina Faso.
