Ouagadougou: The Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries has inaugurated a conference focused on familiarizing quarry operators with the new Mining Code, enacted in 2024. This initiative aims to enhance operators' understanding of their rights, responsibilities, and the innovations brought by the reform, targeting more responsible and sustainable resource exploitation.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the event, organized by the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries (MEMC), is part of an effort to effectively implement the new Mining Code. The conference seeks to boost the capacity of quarry operators concerning their rights, obligations, and the new features introduced by the reform.
"This conference aims to inform you in a clear and accessible manner about your rights, your obligations, the opportunities offered by the new code, but also about the sanctions incurred in the event of non-compliance," stated Mr. Yam©ogo, who represented the Secretary General of MEMC.
A significant innovation in the code is the emphasis on enhancing the involvement of the national private sector in quarry substance exploitation. "The new code gives pride of place to nationals, giving them priority in the granting of mining permits," Mr. Yam©ogo highlighted.
The meeting saw participation from various entities, including the National Anti-Fraud Brigade, the Technical Inspection of Mines, and the Directorate of Legal Affairs and Litigation, among others. This range of stakeholders facilitated open and constructive discussions.
"Given the quality of the participants and the expertise mobilized, I am convinced that the discussions will produce results and concrete proposals," stated the Director General of Careers, Mr. Touob¨kour¨ Stanislas AD M©da.
The conference featured thematic communications and was followed by interactive debates between participants and ministry technicians.
