Reforestation Success: JNA 2024 Site in Centre-West Region Achieves 96% Seedling Survival Rate

Faso: The Centre-West region has achieved an impressive success rate in its reforestation efforts, with 96% of the seedlings planted in 2024 having survived. These encouraging results were observed at the National Tree Day (NTD) site located within the Governor's residence. Of the 175 seedlings planted in 2024 on an estimated 1.5 hectares, only six did not survive. The preferred species for this initiative were mainly Cola cordifolia, Mangifera indica (mango tree), and Peltoforum pterocarpum.

According to Burkina Information Agency, this success is attributable to the good protection of the site, thus minimizing the impact of adverse environmental factors, as explained by Louis Nebi©, Regional Director of Water and Forests. As the Centre-West region celebrates its past successes, attention is already turning to the 7th edition of National Tree Day (JNA), which will be held on June 21, 2025, in Manga, in the Centre-South region. This edition will have the theme "Medicinal Plants: A Source of Health and Climate Resilience for Communities."

A preparatory meeting was held on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, in Koudougou to mobilize the population and ensure broad participation in this national event. The ambitious goal set for this year is to plant 5 million seedlings across Burkina Faso. The Centre-West region has pledged to play its full role in this patriotic call for reforestation.

The preparatory meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss major innovations in reforestation and the 2025 NAD, strategies for mobilizing stakeholders, and capitalizing on the number of plants planted. These discussions aim to maximize the impact of this crucial day on the environment and community well-being.
