Kampala: At Uganda's St. Kizito High School in Kampala, food waste is becoming part of a circular solution. Leftover meals are collected, processed into animal feed, and used to raise chickens, while black soldier fly larvae provide an additional protein source. Students also learn practical environmental skills, from hydroponic vegetable growing and plastic recycling to producing clean cooking briquettes from biodegradable waste.According to Deutsche Welle, the school's hands-on sustainability projects have earned global recognition, with St. Kizito shortlisted for the 2026 World's Best School Prize for Environmental Action. By turning waste into resources, students are learning how to tackle environmental challenges and create opportunities in their communities.
