Stone Barriers Constructed to Protect Zimkrom Dam in Andemtenga

Andemtenga: Work to lay stone barriers of approximately 2 km has been carried out for its protection. The Gourma Water Agency (AEG) began work on Friday, July 11, 2025, on constructing stone barriers along the banks of the Zimkrom dam in the commune of Andemtenga to strengthen its protection. This activity was made possible thanks to financial support from the Belgian Development Agency (Enabel).

According to Burkina Information Agency, the Gourma Water Agency (AEG), together with the population of Zimkrom, carried out on Friday, July 11, 2025, activities of laying stone barriers over approximately 2 km on the banks of the Zimkrom dam, built in 2001 with a water retention capacity of 330,000 cubic meters. Valentin Tapsoba of the Gourma Water Agency stated that the activity is nothing more than a continuation of the Agency's mission of sustainable water resource management. "This work to build the stone barriers is part of an effort to preserve the dam's water, which is essential for the population," he said.

Valentin Tapsoba further explained that the stone cordon system is used because of its durability and efficiency. He emphasized the importance of public cooperation: "We urge the population to strictly comply with the instructions of the technical services in order to guarantee the sustainability of the dam," he concluded.

The chairman of the Water User Committee (CUE), Kiagb© Idrissa, expressed the committee's commitment to working to prevent the dam from silting up. "We express our gratitude to the Gourma Water Agency (AEG) for the initiative which will help to slow down the silting up of the dam to some extent," he said.
