Burkina Hosts 169 Participants for 3rd ‘Elite Mathematics’ Competition

Ouagadougou: The Maison Arc-en-ciel association officially commenced the 3rd edition of the national "Elite Mathematics" competition, drawing 169 candidates in Ouagadougou. This event aims to foster a passion for science among young girls.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Harouna Derra, the coordinator of the Maison Arc-en-ciel association, stated that this year's competition includes participants from 79 high schools across 12 regions of Burkina Faso. The initiative is designed to inspire young girls to engage with scientific subjects like mathematics, physics-chemistry, and life sciences.

At the national level, the competition has registered 15 candidates from primary schools, 42 from secondary schools, and 110 from post-primary schools. Derra highlighted that innovations for this edition include opening the competition to primary school candidates and supervision by Master Martin Niki©ma's office.

The two best candidates in each category will receive scholarships, computers, tablets, school kits, trophies, and medals. Derra urged education stakeholders and parents to encourage young students to pursue scientific subjects, emphasizing the country's need for engineers and scientists for development.

The competition is being held in six centers nationwide. Participants like Rolande Badolo, a fourth-grade student, and Khadija Tiendreb©ogo, a student at La Salle secondary school, expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to compete and excel in mathematics. They appreciated the platform provided to showcase their talents.

Christelle Kon©, a student at Wend-Malgeda High School, noted the competition's role in promoting gender equality. She encouraged her peers to participate, stating that even without immediate success, the experience helps in understanding their skill level.
