"I appeal to all the holders and depositaries of our material and immaterial cultures to a general mobilization for the defense of our cultural heritage", declared this Tuesday, the Minister in charge of Culture, Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo in a message received at the AIB.

Minister Ouédraogo's statement comes on the occasion of the celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites (IMMS) under the international theme "Heritage in transformation".

According to Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo, "the celebration of this day must serve as a pretext to assess the strength of our heritage" and on this subject, he invited the holders and depositaries of our material and immaterial cultures to question themselves.

In particular on the necessary transformations in our heritage and on the control of the involuntary changes which occur in order to adapt positively and in all lucidity to the realities of the evolving world.

“It is quite possible that the answers to these questions will provide us with the keys to our resilience,” he said.

According to Minister Ouédraogo, "this year's edition is an invitation to reflect on the profound changes affecting heritage in all its aspects, in the face of climatic, environmental, economic and socio-political challenges".

In Burkina Faso, he continued, "the preservation of cultural heritage is a major issue in the current context of security crisis".

"In addition to the revision of the law on the protection of cultural heritage which will make it possible to take into account the various changes that have occurred in the meantime in the field, it will be a question for our country of continuing to raise awareness among the actors involved in the protection of heritage", said he pointed out.

This edition will be celebrated in Burkina Faso under the theme “cultural heritage, a factor of resilience in Burkina Faso”.

"Through this theme, it is a question of marking a halt to inspect in our heart of hearts, to draw from the quintessence of our traditions and customs, to detect in the silence of the material historical witnesses which have been bequeathed to us, the substrate which will allow us to reorganize our nation,” said Jean Emmanuel Ouédraogo.

"This is possible on condition that we select the essential elements of our culture, without exclusion, and setting aside other unnecessary elements that could constitute obstacles to our desire to base the future of our nation on solid values" , he suggested.

The Burkinabè Government devoted in the Council of Ministers at its meeting of April 13, 2023, the period from April 18 to May 18 of each year, to celebrate the Burkinabè heritage.

Minister Ouédraogo clarified that this measure has "the objectives of strengthening the social role of the curiosities of our cultural heritage and of encouraging high attendance at heritage spaces, in order to allow Burkinabè people to discover and understand their history. ".
