Ouagadougou: In an unprecedented move to combat deforestation and promote environmental conservation, the Ministry of Environment, Water and Sanitation of Burkina Faso has announced the planting of 5 million trees within a single hour on June 21, 2025. This initiative marks the 7th edition of the National Tree Day (JNA), a key environmental event in the country.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Secretary General Bourema Rouamba emphasized the importance of this initiative during a press conference in Ouagadougou on June 9, 2025. The event, creatively dubbed the "patriotic hour to green Faso," will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., encouraging every citizen to contribute to the reforestation efforts.
The theme for this year's event, "Medicinal plants: source of health and climate resilience of communities," highlights the dual benefits of tree planting for both ecological and community health. The official launch will occur in the Centre-South region, specifically in the commune of Guira.
Ahead of the JNA, President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim Traor©, is set to inaugurate medicinal plant groves in Guira on June 14, 2025. This initiative underscores the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern environmental practices.
Additionally, a cycle race named "Pedal for the Tree" will be held on June 29 along Thomas Sankara Avenue. This event aims to raise awareness about the significance of planting trees along urban roadsides, further contributing to the nation's reforestation goals.
