Challenges and opportunities offered by new 5G NTN technology debated

The challenges and opportunities offered by the new 5th Generation Non Terrestrial Network (5G NTN) technology, making it possible for a smartphone to communicate via satellite, were debated at the 1st edition of the international conference "Spectrum and Technology Trends," organised Thursday in Tunis at the initiative of the National Frequency Agency (ANF). The aim of this conference, which is part of the work of the ANF's foresight committee, is to bring together government officials, professionals from the ICT sector, academics, associations, industrialists and standardisation organisations to share experiences and discuss the connectivity opportunities offered by this new technological trend, which is 5G - NTN, said ANF CEO Olfa Jammeli. She pointed out that the 5G-NTN network, which provides two-way communication between smartphones and satellites, will help cover areas that are inaccessible to terrestrial communications networks. "The conference will culminate in a document comprising a set of recommendations on the methods, licences and frequencies that will ensure satellite coverage in Tunisia. The conference is intended to explore opportunities for setting up the technology needed to operate non-terrestrial networks covering remote areas of Tunisia, explained Managing Director of Communication Technologies at the Ministry of Communication Technologies Chaouki Chihi.
