Dr. Akinwumi Adesina Highlights Role of Public Finance and Governance at Kenya Law Society Conference

Nairobi: Dr. Akinwumi A. Adesina, President of the African Development Bank Group, delivered a keynote address at the 2025 Kenya Law Society Conference, emphasizing the pivotal role of public finance, governance, justice, and development in Africa's progress. Addressing esteemed attendees, including Chief Justice Martha Koome, Dr. Adesina delved into the significance of rule of law and its impact on foreign investment and economic stability.

According to African Press Organization, Dr. Adesina underscored that public finance is not merely a government ledger but a reflection of a nation's constitutional values and legal integrity. He stressed the importance of transparent governance and strong legal frameworks in managing public resources effectively. Highlighting the African Development Bank's commitment, he pointed out that nations adhering to the rule of law and good governance achieve higher growth rates and equitable development.

Dr. Adesina also addressed the challenges African countries face on the global rule of law index, urging improvements to attract foreign direct investment. He pointed out that countries with political stability, transparency, and low corruption levels tend to secure more foreign investments. Drawing examples from Norway and Saudi Arabia, he highlighted the benefits of strong natural resource laws and public accountability in transforming resource wealth into prosperity.

Further, Dr. Adesina advocated for the judiciary's involvement in addressing Africa's public debt issues, including the challenges posed by vulture funds. He highlighted the need for fair legal frameworks and arbitration systems to safeguard national interests and assets. He also emphasized the importance of strengthening judicial systems to foster investor confidence and enhance contract enforcement.

Throughout his address, Dr. Adesina illustrated how the African Development Bank has supported various African nations in improving governance, legal systems, and public finance management. He detailed efforts in countries like Kenya, Rwanda, and Botswana, showcasing successful reforms that have bolstered economic stability and investor confidence.
