Financial transfers to Tunisia reach TND 5.8 billion by end of June 2023

Financial transfers to Tunisia reached TND 5.8 billion at the end of June, down significantly from the TND 11.6 billion recorded in the same period of the previous year, according to the Central Bank of Tunisia's (BCT) financial indicators bulletin No. 223. For the whole of 2022, these financial transfers amounted to around TND 19.1 billion. President Kais Saied had paid an unannounced visit to the headquarters of the Central Bank of Tunisia on Friday, emphasising the urgent need for increased monitoring and control of financial inflows into Tunisia. In addition, data from the Central Bank shows an increase in the value of current transactions, which amounted to TND 44.1 billion in the first half of 2023. These transactions mainly consist of commercial exchanges, tourism revenues and expat remittances. This represents a significant increase of TND 5.2 billion, or 11.8%, compared to the TND 38.9 billion recorded during the same period in 2022. This situation has contributed to the effective management of the balance of payments deficit, which did not exceed 1.8% of gross domestic product (GDP) at the end of July 2023, according to the latest data coming from the BCT Executive Board meeting held on September 7.
