From Vision to Reality: African Energy Chamber G20 Forum to Discuss African Liquefied Petroleum Gas Plans, Investment Prospects

Cape Town: The African Energy Chamber (AEC) is set to host a G20 Forum, serving as a launchpad for clean energy adoption by connecting global capital with African projects. The forum aims to tackle key challenges to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) uptake across the continent, where over 900 million people currently live without access to clean cooking solutions. A panel discussion titled "From Vision to Delivery: National Fuel & LPG Expansion Plans" will explore the continent’s investment needs, supply chain infrastructure, and market development opportunities. Notable speakers include Titus Mathe, Anibor Kragha, Sesakho Magagla, and Tamsin Donaldson.

According to African Press Organization, Africa's gas sector is well-positioned to drive both energy access and clean cooking adoption, with over 620 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and a growing consumer and industrial base. Governments and energy companies are making strides toward strengthening LPG supply chains by investing in infrastructure to support distribution, trade, and access. Key developments include the Tanga LPG Terminal in Tanzania, set to come online in 2027, and Uganda's LPG Cylinder Manufacturing Plant, aiming to release 500,000 LPG-filled cylinders during the 2025/2026 financial year. Additionally, Kenya and South Africa are planning significant investments in LPG infrastructure.

These initiatives align with African nations' efforts to establish pro-investment policies, requiring up to $37 billion in investment by 2040 to achieve universal access to clean cooking. Countries like Zimbabwe and Angola have set ambitious targets to increase LPG access and demand. The G20 Forum will explore effective policy measures, resource targeting, and capital mobilization strategies to overcome LPG adoption challenges and promote equitable progress across sub-Saharan Africa.

NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of AEC, emphasizes the need for massive investment to turn ambition into delivery. By creating an integrated LPG market with clear policies and strong partnerships, Africa can support universal clean cooking, reduce emissions, and drive economic growth across the value chain.
