Gabes- local elections: Harnessing resources for better regional development

The governorate of Gabes is located in south-eastern Tunisia, bordering the Sfax, Sahel and Tunis regions to the north. The region comprises 16 communes, 13 delegations, 73 localities and 80 constituencies, with a population of 410,000. Given the social and economic problems facing the governorate of Gabes, the forthcoming local elections are an opportunity to work towards promoting the economy and employment in the region. - The delegation of El Hamma, known for its mineral water, is made up of eight constituencies. - The delegation of El Hamma-West, rich in geothermal waters that encourage the production of fresh fruit and vegetables, is made up of five constituencies (El Bhaier, Habib Thameur, El Bchima El Borj, Bchima Kalb and Bou Attouch). - The delegation of Metouia, located near the Gabes industrial zone and the Gabes-Tunis motorway, comprises five constituencies: El Akarit, Metouia-North, Metouia-South 1, Metouia-South 2 and Metouia-South 3. - The delegation of Dhkila Toujen, one of the most beautiful mountain villages, is known for its handicrafts and organic farming. It has 5 constituencies: Toujen, Zmartine, Ain Tounine, Dhkila Toujen 1 and Dhkila Toujen 2. - The Ghannouch delegation is made up of 5 constituencies: Ghannouch-South, Ghannouch-East, Ghannouch-North, Ghannouch-West 1 and Ghannouch-West 2. Traditional fishing is the most widespread activity in this region. - The Gabes-South delegation comprises seven constituencies: El Amazir, El Mdou, El Khamsa, Tbelbou, Zrig Dhaklania, Sidi Boulbeba and Limawa. The region specialises in olive growing, sheep and cattle farming, and has a multidisciplinary university complex and a university hospital. - The Gabes-West delegation comprises seven constituencies: Jouawla, Rmethi, Ennahal, Bouchema, Chneni-East, Chneni-North and Chneni-West. This oasis region is very popular with tourists. - The Gabes-ville delegation is made up of 5 constituencies. Affected by pollution, it is an administrative and industrial centre. - The Matmata delegation is made up of 5 constituencies: Tamazret, Tchine 1, Tchine 2, Matmata 1 and Matmata 2. This Berber village is famous for its troglodyte dwellings. - The Mareth delegation includes 11 constituencies: Ezzarat, Zarkine, El Alaya, Zrig, El Ghandri, Sidi Touati, Aaram, Ayoun Zarkine, Mareth, Mareth-north and Waarifen. The region is famous for its pomegranate cultivation. - The Menzel Habib delegation has 7 constituencies: Sgaie, El Fjij, Mhemla, Rbiaa, Ouali, Zograta, Menzel Habib and Oued Zitoun. - The New Matmata delegation has 5 constituencies: Ezraoua, Béni Zlatan, Béni Issa, Newe Matmata and Haddej. Several irrigated areas have been created in the region, particularly for olive growing. - The Oudhref delegation comprises five constituencies: El Mida, El Hicha, Oudhref-South, Oudhref-North 1 and Oudhref-North 2. A project to produce fresh vegetables and fruit using geothermal water has been implemented on 120 hectares in this region.
