Ouagadougou: The delegate of the High Council of Burkinabe Abroad in New York, Brice Ou©draogo, launched the first edition of the "Green Maracana of the Delegate" (MVD) in Ouagadougou from July 17 to 26. The initiative aimed to promote a greener environment in the Burkinabe capital by combining sports and ecological activities.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the Maracana Vert du D©l©gu© brought together eight junior teams in the 9th district of Ouagadougou. The event concluded on July 26, 2025, with Kaza narrowly defeating the Radio Omar team 1-0 in a 2x25 minute match. Apart from a trophy, the winning team received 100,000 FCFA, a ball, a set of jerseys, and 15 plants. The runner-up team was awarded 50,000 FCFA, a set of jerseys, and 15 plants. The inclusion of plants in the awards highlighted the eco-friendly spirit of the competition, as explained by Brice Ou©draogo.
"As a delegate of the High Council of Burkinabe Abroad, I spend my holidays in Ouagadougou and engage in civic activities such as tree planting. I wanted to involve the youth in this effort, combining sport and ecology," stated Ou©draogo. He emphasized the need to integrate sports with environmental conservation, aligning with the current priorities of local authorities.
The event commenced with a reforestation activity near the Town Hall of District 9 in Silmiyiri on July 17. With contributions from participants, 65 plants were planted, each protected by a metal grid, to ensure their growth and protection. Ou©draogo expressed satisfaction with the strong community involvement in the initiative.
The eco-responsible event was attended by the PDS of the 9th district, Colonel-Major Saidou Ou©draogo, representing the ambassador of Burkina to the United States, General Kassoum Coulibaly, and the 3rd deputy of the special delegation of the commune of Ouagadougou.
A second reforestation effort took place on July 19, with approximately 50 seedlings planted along the Kamboinsin cemetery, once again safeguarded by protective grids. The organizer promised to continue these activities for the benefit of the community.
