Internet cables in West Africa break due to seismic activity

RETORIA: The rupture of four internet cables on March 14 in the Gulf of Guinea, off the coast of Ivory Coast, is the result of seismic activity in the region. This was reported by the Nigerian company MainOne, which operates one of the damaged cables. According to its data, the rupture occurred on a section located at a depth of 3 kilometers. South Africa sent a special ship to the area to carry out repair work. It is expected that it will take several weeks for the cables to return to normal operation. The following submarine cables were affected: West Africa Cable System, MainOne, South Atlantic 3 and ACE. Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Gabon, Ghana, Liberia, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda and South Africa were affected by the reduction in internet traffic. Operators reroute the signal on cables that have not been affected by seismic activity. Source: Burkina Information Agency
