Japan Allocates Emergency Grant for Ebola Outbreak in Congo and Uganda

Tokyo: On June 22, the Government of Japan has decided to provide an Emergency Grant of USD 3.5 million in response to the Ebola virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda. This initiative aims to address the urgent health crisis affecting these nations.According to African Press Organization, the grant will facilitate humanitarian assistance in areas such as health, water, sanitation, and hygiene. The assistance will be implemented in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). The objective is to prevent the further spread of the Ebola virus disease both within the affected countries and beyond their borders to neighboring regions.The Democratic Republic of the Congo will receive USD 1.5 million through the IFRC for health initiatives, USD 1 million via WFP for logistics, and USD 0.5 million from UNICEF for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WAS H) efforts. Uganda will also benefit from USD 0.5 million through the IFRC for health purposes.As of June 19, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has confirmed 956 cases, resulting in 247 deaths, while 92 patients have been discharged. In Uganda, as of June 21, 20 cases have been confirmed, with 2 deaths and 14 patients discharged.
