Protection unit against discrimination, violence and harassment set up

Tunis: A protection unit against discrimination, violence and harassment in the media has been set up for all journalists, the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) announced on Friday.

The unit is set up to mark the International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8 each year, according to a SNJT statement.

The union pointed out that this initiative is part of Tunisia’s efforts to honour its international commitments and combat discrimination, harassment and gender-based violence in the media.

It called on all the media to consider the situation of women journalists and to respect the principle of equal opportunity in terms of training, remuneration and social cover, in compliance with the provisions of the Tunisian Constitution, which guarantees full and effective equality between the sexes.

The SNJT further called for the redeployment of journalists in decision-making positions within the media, based on the criteria of competence and the principle of impartiality.
