Rabat: Training in ”Fact-checking” for 25 agency journalists from Africa

Rabat: 25 journalists from member news agencies of the Atlantic Federation of African Press Agencies (FAAPA), including 2 from the AIB, are taking part, from April 22 to 26, 2024 at the African Center of training of journalists (CAFJ) in Rabat in Morocco, at a training seminar on ''Fact-checking''. It was the president of FAAPA and general director of the Moroccan Press Agency (MAP), Mr. Fouad Arif, who chaired the opening of this seminar under the theme 'Fact-Checking: Detection of fake news in media content'. This seminar aims to strengthen the capacities of journalists in terms of 'Fact-Checking' by allowing them to acquire the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to master information verification techniques and fight against Fake News and other rumors. It also aims to strengthen the resilience of journalists in the face of misinformation and encourage them to share experiences in fact-checking. For five days, participants will be equipped by eminent experts on several themes including : the introduction to 'Fact-Checking', 'Fact-checking' tools and techniques, 'Fact-checking' writing practices. , the methodology as well as the roles and missions of 'Fact-checking'. Opening the work, the president of the FAAPA indicated that 'the relevance of the theme chosen for this seminar reflects the importance that the FAAPA places on strengthening capacities, skills and exchanges of experiences between journalists from the agencies African press on a current issue that concerns we all as media professionals. According to Mr. Fouad Arif, 'the current media landscape is characterized by the impact of social networks which contribute to the proliferation of fake News'. As a result, he added, 'African press agencies are today called upon as part of a new dynamic to adapt to the profound changes taking place in the world of media, particularly by supporting the 'rapid evolution of information systems'. 'In this context, these agencies must attach fundamental importance to the exchange of experiences, the sharing of know-how, to face as credible sources the new challenges and the phenomenon of fake news,' recommended the DG of the MAP. He also called on journalists from African news agencies that are members of FAAPA to be vigilant in the process of collecting, processing and disseminating information through the application of 'Fact checking' techniques in order to combat this phenomenon. . 'This is the reason why I hope that this training seminar will result in the creation of an active network of Fact-checkers within the FAAPA institution who will contribute within their respective editorial offices to implement the techniques of verification of information and will strengthen coordination between FAAPA members in this area,' said Mr. Fouad. 'The final objective of this initiative is to create a framework for journalists, allowing them to set up training, a platform specialized in verifying information and multimedia content as well as the development of 'a guide on 'Fact-checking' with a view to mak ing it available to journalists from African press agencies,' he concluded while wishing the participants every success and a good stay.
