Sawadogo Zakaridja Achieves Doctorate for Research on Neglected Corchorus Species in Burkina Faso

Burkina faso: In a significant academic achievement, Sawadogo Zakaridja has been awarded a doctorate from Joseph Ki-Zerbo University. He successfully defended his doctoral thesis in life and earth sciences, focusing on the theme of "Endogenous knowledge and genetic diversity of species of the genus Corchorus in Burkina Faso."

According to Burkina Information Agency, Dr. Zakaridja's research emphasizes the nutritional and agronomic potential of various species of Corchorus, locally known as 'Boulvanka' in the Moor© language. These species, often overlooked, are rich in nutrients and could play a crucial role in improving local diets.

Dr. Zakaridja aims to promote these local species, which are frequently overshadowed by more commonly consumed varieties. He stressed the importance of demonstrating the nutritional richness of the other Corchorus species in the context of encouraging local consumption.

He highlighted that Corchorus species, rich in mineral salts, could significantly enhance diets, particularly in urban areas where processed foods are prevalent. Known locally as Boulvanka, the Corchorus plant could become a strategic element for food security in Burkina Faso if the research findings are disseminated and supported by policymakers and agricultural stakeholders.

The research, guided by Professor Pauline Bationo/Kando, received commendation from the jury for its quality and scientific rigor. Professor Mahamadou Sawadogo, the jury's chair, expressed his satisfaction, noting that Dr. Zakaridja's findings could promote local species and contribute to nutritional self-sufficiency.

The study examined four species, with only one currently widely cultivated. The others, still wild, offer substantial potential. The jury, which included external reviewers from Benin and Niger, praised the scientific rigor and relevance of the results.

Dr. Nanema Kiswendsida Romaric served as the rapporteur, and Koussao Som© acted as the examiner. Both recognized the socioeconomic relevance of the research topic. Dr. Zakaridja's thesis, awarded a very honorable mention, reflects the high-quality work recognized by the entire jury.
