Tunisair has posted 19.5% increase in passengers since start of 2023 (Khaled Chilli)

The national carrier company Tunisair has carried around 1,700,000 passengers on its flights since the start of 2023, up 19.5% on the same period last year, its CEO Khaled Chilli revealed. Nearly 14,283 trips have been scheduled with a total number of seats of about 2 million and 244,000, an increase of about 330,000 seats, or a rate of more than 17% compared with 2022, he pointed out on Wednesday at a hearing held by the Assembly of the Peoples Representatives' Tourism Committee. Speaking at the session devoted to the revenue of the tourism sector in Tunisia, he said that these indicators testify to the recovery of air transport after the crisis it had suffered during the COVID-19 period. Chilli indicated that the Tunisian carrier needs to change the legislative system, especially as restructuring decisions have remained suspended since 2017 and have not been implemented. Tunisair suffers from low financial capacity given the high cost of purchasing or maintaining aircrafts, at a time when the State is seeking to restructure national airlines and control the use of their revenues. The carrier took delivery of the last aircraft on August 25, 2023 as part of a fleet development programme via the leasing service, which includes a contract for the acquisition of 5 aircrafts.
