Tunisia allocates TND 2.4 billion to import grain during first 7 months of 2023

Tunisia's grain imports increased by 4.4% by the end of July 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, and the government allocated 1.4 billion dinars to buy wheat only, out of about 2.4 billion dinars spent on grain purchases.

According to the National Observatory of Agriculture, wheat, including soft wheat for bread and durum wheat, accounted for about 57.5% of Tunisia's grain importsat end July 2023. Tunisia imports barley and maize as part of the grain import basket.

Food imports cost Tunisia about TND 5.4 billion, accounting for about 9.8% of the country's total imports.It should be noted that the value of grain imports recorded a decline of 9.14% until July 2023 and on an annual basis.

The share of grain imports decreased to 54.2% of total food imports by July 2023, compared to a share of almost 61.5% in the same period in 2022.

The average price of imported hard wheat decreased by 22.9%, while the average price of imported soft wheat went down by 18.3%, resulting in a decrease in the value of grain imports from TND 2.8 billion dinars by July 2023 to TND 2.4 billion dinars by July 2023.
