Two Ukrainian deserters rescued in Romania after four days in the mountains

Ouagadougou: Two Ukrainians, who entered Romania illegally, were rescued after four days of wandering in the mountains in the judet (department) of Maramures. This was reported by the Adevarul newspaper. According to the latter, two men aged 30 and 31 were found with the help of a helicopter following the instructions of two other Ukrainians who had crossed the Romanian border so as not to be mobilized into the army. The men did not have the necessary equipment to travel in the mountains, it was snowing and temperatures were below zero. 'When the 31-year-old guy, who could barely move, was taken out of the helicopter, he knelt down crying and kissed the ground, then he hugged each of us and thanked us for 'having saved,' said Dan Benga, head of the mountain rescue service in the county of Maramures. The Romanian media regularly report on young Ukrainians rescued in the mountains on the Romanian-Ukrainian border who flee their country so as not to be sent to the front. Most of them do not have the necessary equipment or food, and many get lost, injured or even die in the mountains. On February 24, 2022, Ukraine declared a general mobilization which has since been extended several times. The Ukrainian authorities are doing everything possible to prevent the flight of men of conscription age, in particular by prohibiting them from leaving the country and by serving summons in public establishments, on the streets and in all other places of assembly.
