Ziro: 54 villages end open defecation

The NGO D-APS, through its Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) project, has succeeded in ending open defecation (ODF) in 54 villages in Ziro, learned the AIB.

The NGO D-APS reported on Friday, August 25, 2023 in Sapouy on its activities to promote sustainable sanitation through the community-led total sanitation approach (CLTS). The work was led by High Commissioner Saïba Zoromé.

Presenting to local authorities, actors and implementing partners the results obtained, the difficulties encountered, the challenges and the prospects in the context of the sustainability of the achievements, such is the objective of this workshop-assessment of the association for peace and solidarity (D-APS).

The restitution of this balance sheet was made by the zone manager Jacques Kaboré.

The first activity according to the communicator, is the capacity building of actors and partners for the implementation and monitoring of the project.

Awareness campaigns on hygiene in schools and health facilities have been carried out. In schools, it is above all hand washing that has been promoted.

In the area of sanitation, communities have built more than 1,000 latrines, enabling 54 villages to declare an end to open defecation (ODF).

To sustain the results, neighborhood village committees (CVQ) have been set up to deal with issues of hygiene, sanitation and water cleanliness.

Insecurity in the province, land problems, reluctance in some villages, were the main difficulties encountered.

The support of the local authorities and the good coordination of the activities, made it possible to curb these difficulties, maintained the communicator Jacques Kaboré.

By the end of 2023, the NGO-D APS intends to certify 55 ODF villages and trigger the remaining 26 villages in the municipality of Sapouy. Then, she will move to two towns in Sanguié (Pouni and Zavara).

Participants' concerns focused on the criteria for ODF declaration or certification, the expansion and sustainability of the project, and the maintenance of latrines.

According to the technician Kaboré, the village is first declared, for three months of activities, if there is an improvement, it is declared ODF. After six months, if technicians still see improvements, the village is ODF certified. Masons specializing in the construction of latrines have been trained and continuously help the communities in their self-construction.

High Commissioner Saïba Zoromé urged communities, local administration, customary chiefs to get more involved so that the objective (Ziro ODF) is reached by 2024.

Also, he invited the special delegations to feed the line water, hygiene and sanitation of the budgets of the communes in order to ensure the sustainability of the achievements of the project.
