Kaya: SP/COMUD/Handicap promotes consideration of disabled people

The Permanent Secretariat of the National Multisectoral Council for the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (SP/COMUD/Handicap) organized on April 25, 2024 in Kaya a meeting to disseminate the Charter for Inclusion disabled people in humanitarian action with stakeholders in the Center-North region. Lassimane KOUNKORGO, the Permanent Secretary of COMUD/Handicap, justified: 'People with disabilities are more exposed when they are confronted with situations; they have to put in a lot more effort to get out of harm's way. » Amado Zamtako, Regional Coordinator of Disabled People's Organizations (CORAPH) in the North Centre, welcomed this initiative in his welcome speech, emphasizing its objective of taking disabled people into account in humanitarian action. In his opening speech, the governor, represented by Inoussa Kaboré, Secretary General of the Center-North region, described this workshop as a response to the 'environmental, institutional and social barriers that people with disabilities face. » Thus, presentations on generalities concerning disability, legal and institutional mechanisms for the protection and promotion of the rights of people with disabilities in Burkina Faso, the need to include people with disabilities in humanitarian action and disability-sensitive planning were presented. were exchanged between the participants. All communications were supported by a film on the rights of people with disabilities. At the end of 24 hours of discussions, the participants declared that they had adopted the Charter for the in clusion of people with disabilities in humanitarian action, signed on August 31, 2023 by Burkina Faso. They were also made aware of the legal and institutional instruments for protecting and promoting the rights of people with disabilities. Recommendations were collected for better consideration of people with disabilities in humanitarian action. According to CONSUR data dating from March 31, 2021, the Center-North region had 1,766 Internally Displaced People with Disabilities (IDP), including 984 women. With a total population of 20,505,155 inhabitants according to the 2019 General Population and Housing Census, the national prevalence of disability, according to the definition of the concept of 'disabled person' retained by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities ( CDPH), is 1.1% among the population aged 5 or over.
