Owners of dog breeders apply to the Court of South Korea SÉ

SEOUL: The Korean Dog Meat Producers Association has filed a petition with the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Korea regarding the ban on the slaughter of these animals and the trade in their meat. This is what the Ryonhap agency reports. According to activists, the law restricts "the freedom to choose one's diet and profession", as well as rights relating to private property. They also call for a halt to the implementation of the corresponding legal rule. In January, the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea passed a law banning the breeding of dogs for meat, their slaughter, distribution and trade. Its provisions will come into full force in 2027, when the planned sanctions will begin to apply. Violations of the law are punishable by up to two years in prison or a fine of $22,300. According to an opinion poll published on January 8 by the animal protection organization Aware, 93% of respondents said they did not plan to eat dog meat in the future. 82% support a ban on the dog meat trade. The survey was carried out in December among 2,000 people. According to authorities, the Republic of Korea has around 1,150 dog breeders, some 34 dog slaughtering companies and around 1,600 catering establishments offering dog meat as food.
